Spiders - Brown Recluse, Black Widow, et al.
We're all familiar with the spider; the ubiquitous and mostly beneficial arachnid found in all types of climates and environments. We know the spider from its distinct webs, which it spins to trap insects. Indeed, the spider is one of nature's methods of pest control. However, its intrusion into our homes is often annoying and can be dangerous.
Spiders
Black widow and brown recluse spiders are both familiar and menacing venomous species of spiders. They are the two species of venomous spiders in North America. The picture to the right is of a hobo spider, also a common indoor intruder.
Brown Recluse Spiders
The Brown Recluse spider is commonly found in the south and western United States, especially in states like Oklahoma and Missouri. As its name suggests, this species is reclusive and seeks dark, protected areas for shelter. Indoors, it is often found in attics, cellars, crawlspaces and seldom used closets. They may also be found in outdoor sheds and tool closets. Sometimes, one may find a brown recluse in hidden areas near living spaces, like under furniture and appliances.
The adult spider is brown to tan in color, with a body around one-half inch in length and over one inch including the legs. The brown recluse is often called a fiddleback because of a unique violin-shaped pattern they have on their bodies.
The bite from the brown recluse is often not perceived, but the bite area will develop a red, raised area between six to twelve hours later. Later, the surrounding area begins to darken into a larger region. A general sickness will appear a day after the bite. Finally, the area of the bite likely develops into a serious wound. A physician should always be contacted if a bite like this is suspected.
Black Widow Spiders
Black Widows are found in most areas of the United States, but they are especially common in the south. They are found most often in attics and other seldom accessed areas. Here they can create their funnel-shaped webs without human interference. Sometimes, black widows are brought in to the living area piggybacking on firewood.
The black widow is easily distinguished by its markings. The male spider has a longer abdomen and red and white markings. The more easily recognizable female has a bright red hourglass marking on her abdomen.
Female black widows are the dangerous ones, as the males will not bite. They will not always bite when disturbed; indeed, they are more likely to try to run away. If you were bitten, however, you might not even feel it. Within three hours, pain will appear and grow significantly in intensity. Severe body aches commonly accompany bites. Again, a physician should be contacted immediately.
Spider Control
If you have a number of spiders in your home, you have an insect population significant enough to sustain them. If you have a regular method of professional pest control, you aren't likely to find live spiders, although you may see their evidence (webs) here and there in undisturbed areas. Since spiders survive on an insect diet, you must control both the spiders and their food. Fortunately, there are professional methods of control that you, the homeowner, can put into play. We've spent a great deal of time evaluating these methods and offer our recommendations for you to control this dangerous pest.
